Come Read With Me!
Dear Sisters,
I have happily re-entered my book era and would like to share some of my recommendations. I’m a fantasy/sci-fi girl at heart; why read nonfiction when you could be reading about dragons and magic and kingdoms and vampires? So if that’s not for you, read no further!
From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
We’ve got vampires everybody! Combine that with a Maiden who is sheltered from the world and a hot bodyguard. I ate this book up, and anyone who loves a good fantasy-romance will, too. However, I will say that I didn’t continue the series after the second book; it really lost me, and I just didn’t care about the story anymore. That being said, I still feel like the first book alone is worth reading.
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
This is a really unique, magical story. I loved the adventure and the high-stakes of it all. The main character will do anything to save her family, and we get to cheer her on. And…we got dragons!! Read this if you’re looking for something you’ve never read before. Fair warning, this is definitely Young Adult and not super heavy on the romance, but still a great time!
Once Upon A Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
This is the most whimsical romance story. It reminds me of a classic fairy tale. I feel like we have so many popular books lately with the “bad-ass”, stubborn female main character, so it was refreshing to read the perspective of a nurturing, peaceful girl who just wants to find love. Plus, this is the first book of the trilogy, and the second is even better! There is another series by this author that starts with the book “Caraval”, and I’ve not read it but heard it is a prequel to this series. So if you really want to get into it, read that one first.
Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson
If you want to read a Brandon Sanderson novel but without the commitment, start here! This was a really clever, fun, quick read, and I found myself dropping my jaw a couple times. This is said to be “The Princess Bride” if Princess Buttercup was doing the rescuing, and although the characters aren’t quite as iconic (how could they be, really), it definitely does give those vibes. This was my first Sanderson experience, and I definitely will be reading more of his books.
Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
We’ve got another vampire romance! There are deadly trials the (human!) female main character has to face to get everything she’s wanted, and who is also participating?! A hot vampire man, who would’ve guessed. It’s enemies to allies to lovers done right, and I had a hoot reading this. The second book may not be as good as the first, but again, the first book is worth it on its own. I’ve also heard many recommendations of Carissa Broadbent’s other books, and they are on my list!
The Night Ends With Fire by K.X. Song
This is a Mulan retelling, but with a more magical plot and more realistic characters. The character development and female rage in this book is so powerful; my blood was absolutely boiling while reading this, in the best way. I flew through this book and was devastated to see the second book isn’t out yet. When it releases, I am dropping everything!
Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare
This one caught me by surprise. I read the synopsis and thought it sounded pretty boring, but once I got into it, I was so invested. It’s a bit of a slow start, but the way the character’s relationships with each other evolve is so interesting. Also, I usually don’t care too much when an author creates a religion, with their gods/goddesses and traditions and all that, but this time I absolutely ate that part up. Definitely give this one a chance! I will be reading all her books after this masterpiece.
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
This is a science-fiction book, so there are definitely some different vibes with this one. It’s a villain origin story, and it’s appropriately dark and twisted. The story-telling leaves you on the edge of your seat, and the character dynamics are equally as interesting. Definitely give this one a read if you’re feeling like you want to see a villain’s point of view.
That’s a wrap for my suggestions. I’ve definitely read some of these because of social media, but there were a couple I just picked up as I was perusing my local Barnes and Noble. Don’t be afraid to judge a book by its cover; sometimes you’ll find a hidden gem! Happy reading!
Scibbity-bibbity,
