Dear Sisters,
Ditch the show you’re watching. I’ve found a better one!
I’ve just discovered a new show I wanted to share with you. I’ve liked Bridgerton because it’s a light watch. I can clean the kitchen or fold the laundry and glance up at the screen to see beautiful dresses, dancing, and more. So when I was looking for a new show while waiting for the next season of Bridgerton, The Great caught my eye. It had that old time feel. The outfits looked fancy, and I didn’t look much further. And I’m glad I didn’t, because when looking for the “next Bridgerton,” I found something much, much better.
The Great is so much more than pretty dresses. It was like taking Brigerton’s costume design adding some of the contemporary wit, violence, and gore of The Umbrella Academy—and to top it off, I feel like there was something, timing maybe?, that reminded me of a modern Princess Bride. I also have to say that the pilot took my breath away. I’ve never seen so much happen in such a fast-paced way that set the stage up for the rest of the show like that before. It was thrilling!
(I can already tell it’s one of those shows that will have me envying others who are about to watch it for the very first time!)
No spoilers — While this show isn’t for the faint of heart, it is for those who want to laugh at the unexpected and ridiculous. It packs a full punch with action, wit, strategy, romance, optimism, and hilarity. I haven’t watched something this funny and engaging in a long time. The story, the dialogue, the tiny and grand gestures all put this show on another level for me. This probably takes the cake as the best show I’ve watched this year (and maybe longer). I don’t think I had felt this excited since my husband and I stumbled upon Severance a few years ago. (Can’t wait for that next season as well!)
The acting is phenomenal. I’ve always felt Nicholas Hoult was a standout in the roles I had seen him in. Seeing him here, so close to center stage, he blew me out of the water. Whenever he wasn’t in a scene, I was hoping he would appear. And Elle Fanning, I honestly didn’t know if I loved or hated in the beginning, won my adoration as well.
Meg, I think you’ll like it for the romance (maybe not the gore). Dia, I think you’ll like it for the acting. Rena, I thinkkkkk you’d like it for the unexpected awkwardness. Nikki, you may not like it. Not sure. Misty, you’ll love it for all of the reasons I do!
Do watch if: You’re in a mood to not take yourself seriously, can handle some blood, invite steamy scenes, and like to ride through all of your emotions.
Don’t watch if: You’re not much for gore, prefer serious dramas over comedic ones, or if nudity bothers you.
And after you watch (or if you have beat me to it and have already seen the show) I’d love to hear your thoughts below in the comments. Please let me know if there are spoilers and for what seasons (I’ve only just finished Season 2)!
Thanks for the recommendation, Jade! I'll give it a try ☺️
Can't wait to check it out!
